Sunday Musings: Finding Time in Your Schedule for Your Daily Devotion

I realize the title of this post is a bit misleading…and wrong. Truthfully we should put God and our time with Him first. If we are honest, we will admit that we don’t always do that. Here are a few ways to make sure you get your quiet time with God.

1. Wake up before anyone else, even if it means getting up earlier.

I am often the first one awake in my home. I like to take those first few minutes to pray and read His word when I will not be interrupted.

2. During your lunch break

I am a teacher, and while I don’t get to leave school for lunch, I do get to eat by myself. There have been times when I’ve gone into my classroom and for a few quiet moments, I’ve prayed and read His word. If you are able to leave your job for lunch, you could always pray and read in your car.

3. In your car

You can use an audio devotion while on your morning commute. I have done this before and thoroughly enjoyed it. Now that my commute is much shorter, I don’t do this as often.

4. Just before bed

Take those last few minutes before bed to read God’s word and meditate on it. I like to wait until everyone else is asleep so I won’t be interrupted. Going to sleep with God’s words in your mind is such a sweet feeling.

5. Your devotional reading doesn’t have to be a long reading.

I love “Jesus Calling” by Sara Young and “Journey” magazine (published by Lifeway). These are short, but I have learned so much from both of those publications.

How do you fit in your daily devotion?
