Sunday Smiles: Childlike

My youngest child, circa 2017

Yesterday, when we were lying on the beach, I was reading When Less Becomes More by Emily Ley. Side note: if you have never read her books A Simplified Life or Grace, Not Perfection, you definitely should. In her first chapters, she mentions her daughter’s sense of awe and wonder, and her joy- and how we, as women, often struggle with feeling overwhelmed and empty.

We can learn so much from a child- they don’t worry, they don’t stress about things like we do, and they are so filled with joy and wonder. I thought about my own little girls- one who is almost grown, and one who still has a lot of growing up to do. I thought about something else, too.

The Bible says we are to have a childlike faith. Matthew 18:3 says, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

What does that mean, exactly? Jesus used the example of children to symbolize humility: kids are often innocent and receptive, where we adults like to try to be in charge. Children trust the Lord blindly, while we as adults often try to control the narrative. While adults can be marred by personal experiences and cynical, children are open to new experiences and readily accept new information.

Have you ever watched a child pray or worship? They don’t care who might be looking, or worry about saying the wrong things. They only trust in the Lord and recognize his power.

We are now halfway through 2025. My goal for the rest of the year is to have a childlike faith: to blindly and fully trust Him, and to humbly seek His will.

Are you living with a childlike faith?
