Back to school wellness routines: staying hydrated

My family lives in North Carolina. The summers and early falls here are hot and humid. Staying hydrated is very important, but also very difficult. My family and I try hard to stay hydrated, especially as school starts back. Here are some tips for making hydration a part of your routine.

1. Pack your water the night before.

The kids use a Stanley cup with a lid, while I use a hydro jug. We fill these the night before when we pack our lunches and put them in the fridge. The next morning when we are preparing to leave, we just grab our water bottles and our lunches and walk out the door.

2. Have access to water throughout the day.

I work as a teacher, so I have access to bottle filling stations throughout the day. If your workplace doesn’t have this option, carry some extra water with you. A simple plastic jug of water will do just fine.

3. Utilize hydration packets.

If you or your children are athletes, you will want to give your hydration a boost after your workouts. Liquid IV tastes great and replaces your lost electrolytes and you can pour it directly into your water. There are lots of other options as well: Nectar, DripDrop and Gatorade all sell a similar product.

4. Track your water intake

Sometimes, you’re less hydrated than you realize. Keep track of your water intake using a phone app, a daily planner or bullet journal. Do what works for you.
